Most tasks in infrastructure construction have a physical location that can be expressed in coordinates. Planning a schedule is about determining the duration and sequence for the tasks in their locations. In addition to schedule constraints (such as dependencies between tasks and number of resources) there usually exist external constraints such as milestones and on-site traffic that affect the order in which tasks can be completed.
DynaRoad Schedule is a graphical tool for scheduling modern infrastructure projects that addresses special civil engineering needs.
Scheduling starts by importing a PDF map to the background of DynaRoad. Coordinate information (if available) is set to the map and then the location breakdown structure (LBS) is planned. The LBS supports linear (chain-like) locations (such as roads and railways) and discrete areas that are defined using DynaRoad’s mapping tools.
Next a bill of quantities (BoQ) matching your LBS is imported to DynaRoad directly from Excel – or manually if a BoQ isn’t available. Tasks are created from these quantities using a template file that contains information on resources, production rates, unit costs and so forth. At this stage you will have a clear understanding of the task locations and average durations.
Locations, quantities and durations have been defined earlier. What is left is setting the timing and completion order for the tasks. This can be done either in Gantt or time-chainage views using common scheduling tools. Resource use can be monitored from the resource view or it can be constrained to a maximum number of machines.
At any time during planning you can select a certain date in the map view and see what tasks are being completed in each location. The date may be cycled up or down to see the sequence of tasks in all or selected locations. This simplifies managing tasks in nearby locations and has proved to be very useful when planning complex projects, where for example on-site traffic management is an issue.
If on-site traffic is an issue, the routes used by the general public (pedestrians or vehicles) are defined as a part of the LBS. Traffic will be diverted from these routes to detours to enable construction. Detours and traffic flow is shown in the same map view with construction related tasks. This way you will be provided with a clear picture of traffic flow on every week of the project. The weekly map may show, for example:
- Color coded routes used by the general public
- Locations of site connections
- Ongoing tasks
If mass haul operations are a major concern in your project, DynaRoad Schedule may be upgraded with a mass haul -module. This is used to create a mass haul plan for your schedule. Required tasks are defined as cuts or fills and scheduled normally. A mass haul plan is calculated automatically based on quantities, bulking factors, possible haul routes, suitabilities and production rates. The result is a detailed cut-to-fill plan complete with haul amounts, distances, refining (e.g. clay processing or aggregates crushing), disposal and stockpiling plans.
